The third installment of the UK’s Road to Glory was packed full of exciting bouts and plenty of stoppages this past Saturday night. The 8-man tournament is the biggest kickboxing tournament of the year and a passage through to the biggest kickboxing stage in the world; GLORY Kickboxing. Previous Road to Glory fighters such as Bailey Sugden and Jamie Bates are now regular names on GLORY fight cards and are both title-contenders within their respective weight divisions.
After his scheduled fight on 29th September was cancelled, Ammari Diedrick took a last minute replacement in the 85kg Road to Glory eight-man tournament. Normally competing between 72.5-76kg, he was taking a big step up against the UK’s best at 85kg.
The tournament got underway with Diedrick up against one of the favourites and seeded fighter Louis King. Coming out with explosive power early, Ammari landed some heavy leg kicks which caused some visible damage. With King showing clear signs of pain, Diedrick targeted the leg with repeated low kicks and the referee waved the fight off in the first round.
Up next for the 4th Dimension star was Jordan Smith, another seeded fighter who was fresh after receiving a bye into the semi-finals after Reece Rowell withdrew from the tournament on Friday. After a back-and-forth battle over the three rounds, Diedrick did just enough to upset the odds again, earning a majority decision and advanced to the final.
